An extraordinary new museum of lace has just opened in Calais, France. Housed in an historic lace mill, the building's new facade replicates in screen-printed glass the punched Jacquard cards that guided the delicate intertwining of threads on Victorian lace-making looms. Like Lace in Translation, the new museum both celebrates the area's historic legacy of lace-making, with five working looms and hands-on opportunities to try out lace-making techniques, and seeks to inspire designers, artists, and the general public with the potential for lace to elicit rich, new creative responses.
