This brooch was made using the Mokume Gane technique of silver smithing. The original billet used to make the piece was a 1" thick sandwich of alternating layers of gilding metal and fine silver. This was rolled and rolled and rolled then patterned with antique lace and rolled some more until it was paper thin, then it was pleated and set with the clasp. The pin goes through the back and is not visible from the front. The piece is about 100 mm in Diameter.
I am a jeweler based in Auckland New Zealand. I collect various antique laces that are just about to fall apart and emboss them into metal so as to record them in a more permanent material.
